What is the purpose of the mount namespace in Linux?

Mount namespaces determine which filesystem mounts are visible to a group of processes, giving each namespace its own separate mount table. This means you can mount or unmount filesystems inside that namespace without affecting the host or other namespaces, and processes inside the namespace will see a view of the filesystem that is distinct from others. This is why containers rely on mount namespaces to present their own root filesystem and internal mount points.

CPU isolation, networking, and quotas are handled by other mechanisms. CPU isolation isn’t provided by a mount namespace, network stacks are isolated by network namespaces, and per-namespace quotas aren’t a feature of mount namespaces.
